Harlow laughed good-naturedly.

‘It sounds paradoxical, I know,’ he remarked; ‘but it is nevertheless true.

I’ve often thought of making a short story of it, but I can’t write short stories. I can only work satisfactorily on a large canvas. Besides, there are some important links missing which I don’t suppose will ever be found. As it stands, the tale is only a jumble of queerness, unexplained, and, I truly believe, inexplicable. It seems wholly improbable; and, besides, people like their fiction neatly rounded off, without any loose ends—worked out and proved, like a sum in arithmetic.’
